Chapter

A chapter is a promise to the next chapter. It should feel satisfying on its own while changing the reader's question about what comes next.

The shape

Begin with a new pressure, not necessarily a summary of what came before.
Let the chapter deepen or change the reader's understanding.
End on a changed state, a new question, or an irreversible choice.

A good place to use it

Novels, memoirs, serialized work, and any story that needs room to develop over time.

Try this

Write the last image first, then find the path toward it.
Cut the explanation the reader can infer.
End one beat earlier than feels comfortable.

A small example

At the end of the chapter, the map was still wrong. The road beneath their feet was not.

Keep in mind

End on a change of state, not a change of location.
You do not have to explain what came before. Trust the reader.
A chapter earns the next one — leave a reason to keep going.
