One moment, start to finish
Scene
A scene is a pressure chamber. Someone wants something, the moment resists them, and the world is not quite the same when it ends.
Try SceneThe shape
- Arrive late, after the ordinary setup has already begun.
- Keep the scene focused on one active pressure.
- Leave once something changes; you do not have to explain the aftermath.
A good place to use it
Practicing conflict, writing a moment inside a larger story, or giving a character one difficult choice.
Try this
- Put two people in a room with one object neither of them will mention.
- Make the character ask for one thing and need another.
- End on a decision rather than an explanation.
A small example
The letter is on the table when she comes in. He has not opened it, but he has moved it three times.
Keep in mind
- One place, one stretch of time, one thing that changes.
- Start as late into it as you can and leave before the end.
- Somebody wants something, and something is in the way.
